I have been a community fan of the Concentus Womens Chorus for a few years now, and recently joined their board when a vacancy opened. My daughter Kara is a member so I have had the great pleasure of attending most of their public appearances over the years. The joy and admiration I have for the music they make is only surpassed by the great pride I have always had in watching my daughter perform.
I recently attended a rehearsal to introduce myself to the group as their newest addition to the board. After a brief conversation with the group, I sat in on the rehearsal and was quickly “blown away” at what I observed. The talent these women possess is truly amazing and inspiring. While I listened to the director (Gwen Gassler) guide them through a new piece, I was reminded of the training and dedication required to make such beautiful music. As they moved through each section of the piece, the high level of skill and talent each and every member possesses was obvious and present. To be able to read, interpret and perform music is such a wonderful gift, but to watch the “behind the scenes” process of all these extremely talented voices working together in such a purposeful way was truly amazing.
I was so happy to have had that opportunity as it gave me a different perspective and appreciation for not only the end result of a performance, but the work and commitment it takes in the preparation.
My mother was a long time member (over 30 years) of a local community choral group, and she never missed a Concentus performance when she was alive. As I sat there listening to the Concentus women, my thoughts went back to the weekly rehearsals and annual performances my mom participated in for all those years, and the true joy and passion she had for music. She was so proud that her granddaughter developed the same love and passion, as am I.
I am in awe at the dedication and talent of the Concentus Women’s Chorus and can’t wait for the next opportunity to listen to them perform. It truly is such beautiful music!
